The Modesto Junior College Office of Student Equity presents guest speaker Wes Moore on Friday, November 4, 2016 at 6 p.m. in the Main Auditorium of the Performing and Media Arts Center on East Campus, 435 College Avenue, Modesto. Moore is an American author, social entrepreneur, producer, political analyst, and decorated US Army officer. He also served as the host for Beyond Belief on the Oprah Winfrey Network. The event is open to the public and admission and parking are free. Moore is speaking about the power each person has to make a positive difference in other’s lives, using his own life and mentors as examples. He will discuss his book The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates and how people are sometimes a single decision away from going in one direction or another. In addition to The Other Wes Moore, he is the author of The Work, and both are New York Times Bestsellers. The Other Wes Moore shares the stories of two boys named Wes Moore who both grew up fatherless in Baltimore, hanging out on the streets and getting into trouble. One ends up a convicted murderer and the other becomes a Rhodes Scholar, decorated veteran, White House Fellow and business leader. The book explores the question of how this disparity of futures happened. The Work is also an autobiographical story of how Moore left behind a difficult childhood to find meaning and his life’s purpose. Moore shares the lessons he learned from people he met and shares stories of other change-makers who've inspired him along the way. Currently, Moore is the founder and CEO of BridgeEdU, a social enterprise dedicated to reinventing the college freshman year experience and creating a softer on-ramp to higher education for students entering their first year of college.
