  The Modesto Junior College Department of Music presents “Stroud Modesto Junior College Band Scholarship Fundraiser Concert” at 3 p.m. on Sunday, January 15, 2017 at the Main Auditorium of the Performing and Media Arts Center, 435 College Avenue, Modesto.

The concert will feature original works and transcriptions by great composers from the history of the wind band movement. Over 50 students and community members have volunteered to play in the concert to support student scholarships. Musicians are traveling from as far away as Massachusetts and Tennessee to perform. The concert will be conducted by MJC Emeritus Professor Stephen L. Stroud and is managed by MJC Director of Bands Erik Maki.

Tickets are available for $10 online at http://mjc.tix.com and at the MJC Box Office, which re-opens January 9 and is then open Tuesday through Friday, 12 noon to 5 p.m., or call (209) 575-6776 during Box Office hours to purchase over the phone. Tickets are also available at the door beginning 90 minutes prior to the performance. Campus parking is free on weekends.

Additional contributions may be made to benefit the Stroud MJC Band Scholarship fund for non-music majors. Contributions should be made to the MJC Foundation and are tax deductible.

Stroud conducted MJC Band performances for over 24 years. He made guest appearances at the Western International Band Clinic in Portland, Western Music Educators Nation Conference in Anaheim, California Music Education Conferences, Northern California Music Association of California Community Colleges, and the Western Conferences of the College Band Directors National Association.

Stroud joined the MJC Music Department faculty in 1980. Prior to that appointment, he taught at Atascadero High School and Lynbrook High in San Jose. He received an A.A. at MJC in 1971, a B.A. in music from University of California, Los Angeles in 1973, a secondary teaching credential in 1974, a M. S. in music education in 1979 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a doctorate in music education with an emphasis in conducting from the same university. Stroud's dissertation was dedicated to "the students and staff at Modesto Junior College, past, present and future." He Stroud retired from MJC in 2015.
