The Modesto Junior College Department of Music presents the 39th Annual New Music Concert on Saturday, April 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the Auditorium of the Performing and Media Arts Center on East Campus, 435 College Avenue, Modesto. The concert is open to the public and admission is free. A reception held in the Auditorium lobby will follow the performance. The program will feature performances of original music compositions by student, faculty and local composers and the New Music Ensemble will perform an original group improvisation. The 39th Annual MJC Celebration of the Humanities Awards will be presented and winning compositions performed in the categories of classical music, popular music, electronic music composition and classical music solo performance, and popular music solo or duo performance. Sam Regalado of Boscoes Brood and a history instructor at the California State University, Stanislaus will perform two of his original music compositions. University of the Pacific music instructor Jeff Crawford will perform his latest electronic music composition. The program will also include MJC instructor and Modesto Symphony pianist, John Hillebrandt performing his composition Transcendental Etude No. 6., and MJC electronic music instructor, David Dow performing his compositions “Dark Matter,” “Timesteps” and “Musical Roulette.” Dow also is the coordinator and host of the event. The New Music Ensemble will perform an original group improvisation. The New Music Concert was founded 39 years ago as a collaborative effort between MJC music professor emeritus Shirley Woodward and Dow to encourage students and faculty to create and perform new music. After creating the music, students could enter their works in “The Manuscript Madness” composition contest and win cash prizes. This competition later became a part of the MJC Celebration of The Humanities student contest that is held each spring.
